Islamic Agricultural Labor System

The Islamic Agricultural Labor System from the fundamental question of how to treat agricultural labor fairly from an Islamic perspective, including in determining fair wages. Within this framework, Islam emphasizes the importance of "humanizing farmers," especially farm laborers, who have often been marginalized. Farm laborers should not be viewed merely as factors of production, but as brothers and sisters with equal dignity to landowners. This principle aligns with various global movements such as family farming and the struggles of global farmers' organizations that advocate for fairness in the workplace, social protection, and the recognition of agricultural labor rights.

The Islamic Agricultural Labor System itself prioritizes the welfare and dignity of workers, through the provision of fair and adequate wages, decent working conditions, and protection for workers and their families. This system is based on four key principles of Islam: human freedom, human dignity, justice without discrimination, and fair wages. Islam also emphasizes the importance of transparent employment contracts, timely payment of wages, and compassionate and non-injustice treatment of workers.

Operationally, this system can be implemented through various sharia-compliant schemes such as ijarah, muzara'ah, and musaqah, and supported by social instruments such as zakat for poor agricultural laborers. This approach also aligns with the concept of fair wages for farmers, which emphasizes a living wage based on living expenses and work contributions. Thus, the Islamic Agricultural Labor System is not only an ethical concept but can also serve as a concrete policy framework for creating a just, humane, and sustainable agricultural employment system.
