Family Farming as a concept basically contains Islamic values, as it places the family at the center as the main production unit, with most of the labor provided by family members themselves. This model is similar to the “peasant” tradition, in which farming is not only an economic activity, but also a way of life deeply embedded in social and cultural patterns. At the global level, Family Farming is defined as a form of managing agriculture, forestry, fisheries, livestock, and aquaculture that is owned and directed by a family, relying primarily on family labor and integrating economic, environmental, social, and cultural functions into a single, cohesive unit.
Family farming is regarded as an important alternative for the future of the world, expected to meet global food needs, reduce poverty, generate well‑being, and protect biodiversity and the environment. International support is reflected in the designation of 2014 as the International Year of Family Farming, along with the establishment of coordinating bodies such as the National Family Farming Committee in Indonesia and the National Joint Coordinating Committee on Family Farming. In Indonesia, this model has been developed and strengthened through collaboration among government agencies, family farming movement organizations, and various NGOs.
Islamic Family Farming adapts the concept of Family Farming by explicitly integrating Islamic values into the aspects of production, distribution, and consumption, emphasizing social justice, environmental sustainability, and the fulfillment of shar’i rights. Unlike conventional Family Farming, this model does not only rely on the family as the main labor force, but also turns farming into worship, ensuring that all processes—land tenure, inputs, supply chains, and ecological practices—run in a halal and ethical manner. Within this framework, it closely relates to Islamic Organic Agriculture, Islamic Agrarian Reform, and Islamic Agricultural Supply Chain, thereby promoting food security grounded in the maqasid al‑shariah.
