Islamic Food Security emphasizes not only the availability of food but, more importantly, the management system behind it (security). Conventional food security is typically assessed through four pillars: availability, access, utilization, and stability. However, this approach often overlooks key dimensions such as spirituality, distributive justice, and ecological sustainability. Therefore, the Islamic concept of food security offers a more comprehensive and value-based paradigm.
The Islamic model of food security is rooted in the practices of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in Madinah, which emphasized fair food distribution through institutions such as the Baitul Mal, zakat, and charity. This system aimed to ensure access to food, especially for vulnerable groups, while prohibiting monopolistic practices and price speculation. Core Islamic values such as justice, balance, and social responsibility serve as the foundation for building a sustainable and inclusive food system.
Conceptually, Islamic Food Security is a system that integrates Sharia principles to ensure access to halal, nutritious, affordable, and sustainable food for all. In this framework, the state plays a central role in guaranteeing the fulfillment of basic needs for every individual, including food. This responsibility is carried out through a layered mechanism, starting from individual responsibility, followed by family support, and ultimately state intervention through institutions like the Baitul Mal and Sharia-compliant public policies.
To ensure sustainability, the state must also regulate economic systems and control key production resources such as agricultural land, while eliminating market distortions like riba (usury), hoarding, and monopoly. In addition, food safety and quality are strongly emphasized, including aspects of halal compliance, hygiene, and nutrition. Through this holistic approach, Islamic Food Security not only ensures food sufficiency but also promotes a just, healthy, and sustainable food system aligned with Islamic values.
